From Academic Research to Industry Leadership
My path into regulatory localization began with a question that emerged during my doctoral research at Ionian University: Why do translation technologies fail so consistently when handling pharmaceutical and cosmetics compliance documentation? The answer was not simply linguistic accuracy; it was the fundamental disconnect between translation processes and regulatory domain expertise.
This insight shaped my career. After completing my PhD in Translation and New Technologies, I built Intertranslations’ regulatory localization practice around a core principle: compliance documentation requires translators who think like regulatory affairs professionals first, and linguists second. Understanding CPNP workflows, REACH directives, ingredient classification hierarchies, and claim substantiation frameworks is the foundation of every successful submission.
Today, as Head of Global Localization Solutions and Innovation, I lead teams supporting skincare and dermocosmetics brands, medical device manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies across 50+ regulatory markets. My current postdoctoral research explores how knowledge graphs and large language models can enhance terminology accuracy in regulated domains, work that directly informs our client workflows and quality assurance protocols.
Shaping Industry Standards
GALA Common Machine Translation Post-Editing Protocol
In 2018, I authored the GALA Common Machine Translation Post-Editing Protocol, now used by over 500 language service providers globally as the quality benchmark for MT workflows. This framework emerged from research conducted with 300+ professional linguists and established standardized evaluation criteria, productivity metrics, and workflow guidelines that transformed how the localization industry approaches machine translation integration.
The protocol addresses a critical gap: while machine translation technology advanced rapidly, the industry lacked consistent quality standards and post-editing best practices. By creating measurable benchmarks and transparent client-linguist communication frameworks, the protocol enabled LSPs to adopt MT strategically rather than experimentally.
